MONKEY MIND
David Gunderlach
Painting from four decades
21.09.2024 – 20.12.2024
Haus Kunst Mitte is presenting for the first time an exhibition of works by painter David Gunderlach under the title MONKEY MIND. On display are 50 paintings created over the last forty years. The exhibition title MONKEY MIND refers to a Buddhist concept that describes the volatility and restlessness of the human brain and the lack of control over the flow of thoughts.
Gunderlach‘s works are characterised by this restlessness. Many brushstrokes pointing in all directions, sketchy depictions of everyday objects and graffiti-like words and letters testify to a fast way of working. His works not only symbolise the fast pace of our thoughts, but also the fast pace of our modern lives. They stand for the realities of life at the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century, which are characterised by permanent acceleration, the compulsion to increase, innovation intensification and constant accessibility. Gunderlach‘s open compositions and the many references to city life epitomise the absurdity of the simultaneity of our everyday lives.
Gunderlach was born in Neu-Ulm in 1957 and first studied acting and then painting. In 1987, he brought back his unmistakable style from a one-year working stay in New York, the art metropolis on the East Coast of the USA, which appealed to all his senses.
